As someone who juggles many roles—being a hands-on parent, taking care of household chores, carving out “me time”, and running my own business—I’ve come to realize that time is one of the most valuable resources we have. It’s something that never seems to be enough of, yet it’s crucial to make everything work.
Over the years, I’ve learned some valuable lessons about managing time effectively, and one of the biggest takeaways is this...
Being intentional about how you use your time is key.
The Challenge of Balancing Multiple Roles
Like many people, I’ve struggled with balancing the demands of family, home, and work.
There have been days when I felt like I was constantly putting out fires, moving from one task to the next without really accomplishing anything meaningful. I would go to bed exhausted but feeling like I hadn’t made any real progress.
As a parent, we want to be there for our children, guiding them through life and cherishing every precious moment.
At the same time, the responsibilities of managing a household never seem to end, there’s always another meal to cook, another mess to clean, and another load of laundry to tackle.
On top of that, running a business requires focus, creativity, and strategic planning. It’s hard enough to grow a business, let alone find time for it in between all the other responsibilities.
And of course, there’s the need to take care of yourself, something that often gets pushed to the bottom of the list.
What I’ve Learned: Intentionality is Everything
Through trial and error, I’ve discovered that the key to managing time effectively lies in being intentional with how you use it. It’s not just about scheduling your day, it’s about aligning your time with your values and priorities.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
1. Define What Truly Matters
Before you can manage your time, you need to get clear on what really matters to you. For me, it’s spending quality time with my son, building a successful business, and making sure I have time to recharge and take care of myself.
When you know what’s most important, it becomes easier to make decisions about where your time goes.
2. Plan with Purpose
It’s not enough to simply make a to-do list. I’ve found that planning with purpose, meaning that every task on my list is tied to a larger goal. It helps me stay focused and avoid wasting time. Whether it’s scheduling focused work hours, setting aside time for family activities, or penciling in some much-needed self-care, each part of my day has a clear purpose.
3. Embrace Flexibility
One of the hardest lessons I’ve had to learn is that no matter how well you plan, life happens. Kids get sick, unexpected things come up, and plans go awry.
I’ve had to learn to embrace flexibility and understand that it’s okay if everything doesn’t go exactly as planned. What matters is that I’m intentional about how I adapt and move forward.
4. Say No to What Doesn’t Align
Time is limited, and sometimes that means saying no to things that don’t align with your priorities.
This was a hard one for me. Like many people, I used to say yes to every request or opportunity that came my way. But I’ve learned that in order to protect my time for what really matters, I have to be selective about what I take on.
5. Be Present in the Moment
Finally, I’ve learned that being present in the moment is one of the most powerful ways to make the most of your time.
When I’m spending time with my kid, I try to be fully engaged and not distracted by work.
When I’m working on my business, I focus on the task at hand without letting my mind wander to household chores.
Being present allows me to get the most out of every moment.
It’s Challenging, But It’s Doable
Managing time as a hands-on parent, homemaker, and entrepreneur is challenging—there’s no doubt about it. But it’s also doable. By being intentional with how you use your time, planning with purpose, and staying flexible, you can create a life that aligns with your values and allows you to thrive in all your roles.
I’ve learned that time management isn’t just about cramming more into your day, it’s about making sure that the things you do are meaningful and aligned with the life you want to create.
So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the demands on your time, take a step back and ask yourself:
Am I using my time intentionally?
It’s a journey, and it’s one that requires constant reflection and adjustment. But with intentionality, balance is possible even in the midst of the busiest days.
